DIY Striped Table

When I moved to Atlanta, I didn't have any furniture. Since I lived in the dorms all through college, there wasn't ever a need for anything! So after I moved, I went & bought some things to get myself through until I could purchase nice, forever things. One of those items was a coffee table that was on clearance for $75. That was still a lot of money for me, but I loved it. It was white, had a glass top, and had a drawer to put all of my stuff in.

Since that time, that table has moved to 5 different homes  & been painted 4 times. I still loved the table, but I hated the glass top. The main problem with it was that you could see EVERYTHING inside the drawers...aka junk.

After looking on Pinterest for hours one day, I had an idea: I was going to spray paint the glass top. It's at this point Andrew gave me the side eye...I'm pretty sure that before my husband met me, he had no idea that people actually use it on furniture. But, I told him not to fear because if it didn't work out, fingernail polish remover would get it right off! #winwin

I knew I didn't want anything crazy, mainly because our living room is very neutral tones, but with an amazing & bright rug. I didn't want my glass top to take away from the beauty of the rug. After much discussion with the paint guy at Home Depot who is my new best friend, we decided on gold & champagne stripes.

First thing, I cleaned the glass top. The coffee table is our main dining area for the most part, so it needed a good cleaning. I also scraped off any paint that was stuck on it from past table painting!

After that, I decided on a design. Since I wasn't sure I was going to love this, and I only had a few hours to get it done, I decided on a diagonal stripe pattern. Using the painters tape that I bought, I started in the middle & completely covered the entire top with tape, making sure that my tape didn't overlap. Important note: you want to put the tape on the underside of your glass. (Please ignore our mess...we were also painting cabinets this day)

After taping the glass, I went through and removed every other line of tape. This gave me a nice idea of what my stripes would look like. Using my champagne spray paint, I sprayed the entire glass. Once it is covered, it should look like one color. Immediately after, I removed the remaining tape.

Next, I used my gold spray paint & repeated the same process of spraying the entire piece of glass. After I sprayed it, I brought it inside to dry for about 3 hours. My sweet husband stuck his finger on it at one point & it had to be resprayed...thanks honey! :)

After I was sure it was dry (and has no finger prints), I put it back on the coffee table...and fell in love.

Isn't she lovely?!?!

This project was SO easy, but definitely takes some time. I want to try this on a lucite or plastic tray & see if I get the same results.

I hope to show off the kitchen next week (our backsplash hasn't come in yet). Check back soon!

Happy St. Patty's Day!
